Beyond the Notes: Exploring an Enriched Aural Approach to Piano Repertoire
Description: The purposeful use of rote learning applied to piano repertoire can be a valuable tool for enabling students to explore pieces beyond their reading ability. Aural experiences also offer an opportunity for deeper and more enduring learning regardless of how much our students practice. This session will explore using musical context, patterns and improvisation in an audiation approach to deepen musical understanding and skill while facilitating ease of learning. We will discover wonderful opportunities to expand a student’s experience beyond the imitation often associated with rote learning, building toward the goal of life-long music making.
Presenter: Janna Olson is a sessional instructor at The King’s University in Edmonton, Alberta where she teaches Piano and Piano Pedagogy. She also maintains a thriving independent piano studio. Janna is an active clinician, adjudicator, conservatory examiner and collaborative pianist. She holds Bachelor degrees in church music and piano performance and a Masters in Applied Music and Piano Pedagogy from the University of Alberta. She serves as a piano faculty member with the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. She enjoys living in a “winter city” where she takes advantage of non-musical activities such as speed skating and skiing. Other diversions include fitness workouts with “November Project Canada” which meets outdoors in all four seasons and in all temperatures (90 above to 40 below).

This year, LMTA will be hosting a 1-day Virtual Conference. It will be a great conference with sessions from guest clinicians and members, and performances. There will even be a lucky draw! We look forward to seeing all of you as we learn, share, and celebrate our friendship.
